Barnsley Leaders VS U13 York V.Kings / Shef Sharks (12:30)

BARNSLEY LEADERS BASKETBALL    PRESS REPORT    20 FEBRUARY 2011 

Barnsley Leaders U13s finished four points behind York Vikings after a strong second half fight back in their final EBL outing of the 2010/11 season. (EB NE Conference, Manor CE School York).

Power forward Lewis Tinker was fouled as he scored the opening basket against the Vikings, he sunk the free shot to put Barnsley three points up in the first minute. The Vikings hit back to lead 14-7 at the close of the first period. Martynas Kandrotas, Joe Taylor and Lewis Tinker were on target in the second period as York won an 8-6 split to lead by nine at half time.

Improved defence from the Leaders held the Vikings to a 5-5 split in the third period with Thomas Rymer (3) and Tinker (2) scoring the points. The final period opened with the Vikings extending their lead to thirteen points then  Barnsley hit back with a 10-0 run to close the gap to just three points with one minute remaining. The Vikings called a time out to stop the Leaders run and then played keep ball to run the clock down. The Leaders conceded fouls to try to retain possession but the home side hung on to win 32-28.

The Leaders were then straight back on court to face Sheffield Junior Sharks. Power forward Tinker had two strong drives to the basket before sustaining a knee injury in a heavy fall which put him back on the bench. With the Leaders' top scorer sidelined the Sharks took advantage to lead 20-5 at half time. The young Leaders, with six of their nine underage, put up a determined fight with Zoe Silcock, the only player to remain on court throughout two games, leading the way. But the Sharp shooting Sharks dominated the offences to finish 57-12 victors.

Saturday sees the Leaders U16s return to action with a home game at 10.30am against Durham Wildcats and on Sunday the U12 s and Rookies travel to Sheffield for the Goals, South Yorkshire tournament.
